Note to people from other countries and maybe sophisticated urban environments, I dunno: "Fair and Square" does not have anything to do with the "just and equitable" meaning of the word "fair."
that's what I mean. if you identify a situation where the rules are unacceptable then it seems natural to object to calling ANY game played under those rules fair. a strictly legalistic construction of fairness excludes so much of the moral dimension that it can become useless.

I'm pushing back because I don't think you can draw such a bright line between justice and "following the rules" fairness and still retain enough utility for the concept to be worth using.

It is a very specific concept. Which I know is not the Done Thing these days, but dammit, I am as entitled as anyone else to serve as my own lexicographer.
