idk it just feels like an all-powerful federal govt of so much land is such a bad idea, also open to far-reaching corruption (or legal corruption: lobbying)

How is it any worse than a state government, though?

State governments are like federal but cheaper.

smaller governed body = fewer people feel "left out", faster feedback loops, greater participation per person, also you can move states if you don't like it

At the same time, vastly more likely to have more abuse of human rights and things that shouldn't be legal, I'd imagine.

why would a smaller government entail more abuse of human rights? and "shouldn't be legal" is, like, your opinion man

I mean, if you look at states right now, like half of them allow you to marry a 3 year old and legally have intercourse with them. Like, sure, "morality is subjective" but that shit's way too young.

maybe their communities have ways of preventing child abuse that don't rely on laws, and they don't want to unnecessarily involve the government in their lives?

There're so many papers on how child rape permanently scars children that it's more or less objective that something like "No, you can't have sex with a three year old" is a necessary law.

we're way off topic now and answering this gets into theories of law and governance and how morality is formed etc. suffice to say people do what they will and making it illegal doesn't prevent it really, it just punishes people who get caught if they get caught.

look at every other instance of trying to get ahead of culture change with legislation and see how it works out. the law is a blunt instrument. culture change is necessary to correct inequities but the leading edge of the culture should not be the legislative process.

It's not really "trying to get ahead of culture change," since sex with children hasn't really been chill culturally for seventy years now.

It makes sense that one would want there to be a world in which people are not doing things that permanently scar children. But...

...when we enact a law, it's important that we consider (1) the scale of the problem we want to fix (2) our ability to actually *solve* the problem through legal means (3) the "side effects" of our chosen enforcement mechanisms

Scale: big enough to be an issue Ability to solve: good enough that it prevents at least a bit Side effects: none, as long as proper Romeo and Juliet laws are in place.

None of these are particularly convincing or specific. I read this as "we don't know how widespread it is or how we're going to fix it, but it seems like a bad thing and we want it gone.", which is the thing I mentioned earlier about "bad thing -> make a law".

For more exact wording: Scale: http://victimsofcrime.org/media/reporting-on-child-sexual-abuse/child-sexual-abuse-statistics … Ability to solve: Not entirely to solve, but to deter. Side-effects: Nothing unpositive, as long as Romeo and Juliet laws are in play.
