The intuition that machines cannot be as ethical as humans is likely incorrect. Ethics is the systematic resolution of conflicts of interest under conditions of shared purpose. Ethics is not irrational. There is no reason to assume that machines cannot be more ethical than us.

You are such a hardcore materialist! I would argue that the essence of ethics is choosing the guiding principles of such a system - deciding on ‘the good’. Of course, this is fairly arbitrary unless you posit some ‘transcendent’ good eg god (which I’m aware you would never do...)

I don't read any explicit materialism in his tweet. Using reason to derive agreed upon behavior norms seems like a totally agnostic position.
