Why does anyone think single payer will make healthcare cost less? The military is single payer and it’s the most expensive thing we’ve got.

Private insurance companies employ statisticians to offer lower rates to healthier people. If you cover everyone you don’t need them.

There are also a huge number of people with jobs at providers trying to figure out how to get services paid, and at insurers, trying to pass the buck or get someone else to minimize. This is the most obvious inefficiency.

I’m sorry but if you think the government isn’t full of buck passers and people trying to get paid I’m not sure what to tell you.

I am not saying it is clear single payer will reduce overall costs, but pretty much by definition it will eliminate the need for ppl paid to get someone else to pay for it, and paid to track that payer down. Some inefficiencies will go away.

I have had several encounters with such people on the provider side. They do this all day long. They do not any other admin stuff, they talk to other counter-parties who do this all day long.

Not sure how Replacing “pay people to figure out who should get paid for what procedures” with “pay for all the procedures” will be cheaper though. Like yes, no one will be arguing over who should pay, we’ll all just pay.

That's a biggie. "Rationing care", death panels, etc. Personally not optimistic that single payer would save money, given history and expectations in the US.

what if death panels are good?

In the long run we are all dead. Which FWIW was originally reminding us that system dynamics matter, and not mere fatalism. https://www.google.com/url?q=https://en.m.wikiquote.org/wiki/John_Maynard_Keynes&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwj76vLNnc7bAhVLoFMKHZ_kCIUQFggOMAE&usg=AOvVaw2tOL6Qof8GVwCM8J0i9W1q …
