Western liberal ideology is ‘appealing’ in the way that, say, Cartesian dualism is appealing: ‘a picture held us captive’. We struggle to find another way of seeing things. Even critics blindly accept its assumptions.
liberal ideology seems to do a better job (to my mind anyway, with all its quirks) of casting an effective glamour. it takes work to see through it and I still find a strong desire arising to salvage the parts of it worth salvaging.

Right, but the whole of philosophy of mind is basically an attempt to wrestle with Cartesian dualism, even though most people today signal against it. I probably could've found a better example though.

I guess my perspective on liberal ideology is that the disgusting part of it is that it's an ideology, and all ideologies are parasites. the reality of living in a pluralistic society makes liberalism seem like the best of many flawed solutions though.
