A friend of mine is interested in a "programming for dilettante's" kind of book: She's not interested in actually doing programming herself, but wants to learn about the concepts, different styles, debates, etc. Any recommendations?
It's a pragmatic discipline though. I have very low confidence that it can be meaningfully understood without practicing it. Like, how much do you think you could learn about carpentry without doing any woodworking?

virtually my entire non-fiction consumption is this but for other subjects. Math, sci, astronomy, architecture, photography etc... Doesn't make me any good at them but I enjoy it.
