having some really mixed feelings about thishttps://www.vox.com/first-person/2018/2/19/16739386/ayahuasca-retreat-psychedelic-hallucination-meditation …

there's a certain type of narrative that seems to be "baked in" to the way Ayahuasca tourism is conducted. I've read many similar accounts, though this one is well written and very detailed. it's an instance of it's class though. simultaneously deeply personal and also archetypal

the narrative is basically this: "you're a shitty, awful, alienated, tainted, selfish, destructive, asshole of a person and Grandma Aya is gonna kick your ass until you get it then you can go home and somehow things get better"

in other words, they've cultivated a system for having guaranteed bad trips, excuse me, "challenging experiences", and trying to convince people that it's good for them. is it? maybe it is. I've had some bad trips that I did learn something from.

does it have to be this way? I dunno. I can't make generalizations about what other people need. I know that my own best trips, the ones that have really made the biggest and most lasting impact on how I feel and how I live my life were the good ones, not the punishing bad ones.

it would be easy to criticize the tourist framing of this stuff too. I won't go there. If you wanna have a spa day before you purge your guts out and have a spirit dress you down, ok, go ahead. No objections from me.

We're having a psychedelic moment right now. The potential for the reintroduction of these medicines into culture and it really matters a lot how we do it. Last time we screwed up. Is this model the right one? I'm deeply skeptical.

a lot of noise is made about "cultural appropriation" when it's often just some non-sensical bullshit from an internet call-out artiste. that doesn't mean there's never anything that counts as cultural appropriation though. Ayahuasca tourism might be cultural appropriation.

that's the least of my concern though. I don't particularly care about that, though I do hope the right people are getting the money, because there's a lot of money getting thrown into this shit right now.

my concern is that this experience that's being marketed to people is so so so heavily based in self-flagellation. the physical agony and psychic torment of the experience. this is an ordeal, in the classical sense of the term (a painful test administered by the gods).

is this what people need for their spiritual development? to feel like they're worthless shit, covered in sin? well, there it is. the Christian roots of our culture follow us everywhere we go. Beg forgiveness and may the gods have mercy on your soul.

I'm not about to tell anyone what they should do for their spiritual development. That's personal stuff and I'm strictly non-prophet. I wouldn't make this choice though. I've had some uplifting experiences that have restored my positive regard of myself and the world.

It can be done! There's a way to use psychedelics as a ritual sacrament that doesn't involve the spirits telling you how much they fuckin hate you for the crimes of your ancestors and the emptiness of your modern life.

all I'm really saying is "set and setting" matters. we already know this. maybe pick a set and setting that sets you up for something more productive than being called out on a metaphysical level.
