1/2 Some feel compelled to point out that Freud's ego/id/superego division of the psyche isn't "scientific". But they offer no better framework for discussing the internal tension we feel when adjudicating between our own individual interests and the interests of our groups.

2/2 Are they worried we think there is an actual partition in the brain corresponding to id/ego/superego? Are they worried that we won't switch models if they offer a better one? Or do they not care about the essential tension between individual and group interests?

I think about this a lot. I don't have a real answer. As best as I can tell it was an historical accident related to shifting fashion trends in academia in the 1950s and the way that got promulgated to broader culture through mass media.

in other words, Skinner became VERY influential at that time and his professional rivalries and grievances became gospel
