really wish more people would internalize the implications of the Streisand Effect if you don't like something and want it to go away, you should ignore it, not attack it in the most distorted, hyperbolic, mendacious way you can muster

I wonder how many people who openly draw attention to the thing they dislike are actually subconsciously trying to perpetuate the conflict (vs being fundamentally ignorant of the fact that they’re giving it attention)

that's got to be a big part of it. when the media does it, it's probably intentional. when ordinary people do it they may be "useful idiots" (to a borrow an apt but unkind term). I think a lot of it just taps into monkey-mind social maneuvering even though it's maladaptive now.
