Interesting ice formation along the shore of Lake Superior in at dawn today. What do you think it looks like? Temperature right around zero; a thin layer of ice formed on this part of the lake overnight.

The Minnesota PUC has now also approved a route permit for the oil pipeline replacement project. That gives Enbridge the key approvals it needs to build the new line, although it still needs additional state and federal environmental permits.

Minnesota utility regulators have re-issued the Certificate of Need for Enbridge's Line3 oil pipeline replacement project by a 3-1 vote, with Commissioner Schuerger the lone "no" vote. This is the key approval Enbridge needs to move forward. PUC will next turn to the route permit

Looks like we still have one branch of state gov at loggerheads with another. The MN Dept of Commerce tells the MN Public Utilities Commission it should deny a certificate of need for . The Dept says Enbridge has not provided an energy demand forecast as required by MN law.

But Benjamin Benoit with the Leech Lake bands wants Enbridge to replace so the existing pipeline can be removed from his reservation. Says the damage to the environment of a spill on the existing Line 3 "would be nothing short of catastrophic."

Joe Plummer, Red Lake Nation tribal attorney, in arguing against the need for , says currently the Enbridge mainline transports 2.8 million barrels a day. The 2 MN refineries use about 400,000 barrels per day. Says MN doesn't need Line 3, Enbridge does to make more $.

This is a big question for Minnesota and other states trying to address change: As Xcel moves toward coal-free, will natural gas remain part of energy mix? via

Can't believe this was almost 5 years ago now. At the time there was very little reporting in the mainstream media in MN and elsewhere about , and its impacts. One positive development is that there is now a lot more being reported, at and elsewhere.

To my environment/climate change followers: I've stepped away from reporting to help with a leadership transition. While I will continue to advise the newsroom on environment and climate change coverage, you won't be seeing my byline. (Thread.)

The Trump administration has finalized a rule that substantially reduces the number of federally protected streams, wetlands and other water bodies across the US. Here's a story I wrote in 2018 about what that will mean for MN:
