The residential program first kicked him out, then said he could stay if he started over, incl'g a new 30-day blackout barring all contact with family and loved ones. About 2 mos sober and committed to his mental health, Gregory knew this was unfair and went home. (2/x)

Despite this setback, Gregory continued in recovery, seeking outpatient treatment at the Drug Court center, BUT THEY TURNED HIM AWAY. He persisted, finding another outpatient program on his own, staying sober (3 mos now) and continuing to go to court as ordered. (3/x)

When the judge threatened jail, G. stuck to his principles, having little else. Having backed himself into a corner trying to coerce a man to go somewhere that no longer served him, the judge was unable to find the courage to admit a failed course and seek a more humane one.(4/x)

Apparently it’s easier for some to throw a fellow human being into a cage than to swallow their pride and admit a mistake. Especially if the human in question is an indigent person of color. And this in “progressive" San Francisco.

Some have asked what they can do to help. We will be asking the judge to reconsider Gregory’s sentence on Monday at 9 am. The more community support the better. 850 Bryant Street, 3rd floor, Dept 23. Thank you, Twitter community

Update one week later: Gregory is free! The DA’s office agreed and the judge went along with it. The public support was key. One for justice!

Judges have too much power.
-
In some ways. But they need more power in sentencing. Mandatory minimums almost sent me away for 10 to 99 on a 1st offense weed charge. The lawyers who defended me should be given some kind of award for the shit they had to pull to keep me from that.

Thank you for tweeting about these things---and for working in this system and bringing these injustices to light. They're important for lay people to know about.
