This is particularly true in a place like the UK, where we have a welfare system that tries so hard to keep people in whatever work is available, rather than let them fall into unemployment (a point made well by in the past).

So important for thinking about the future of work. Most of the time, we tend to talk about the number of “jobs” there are likely to be. But a weakening in the demand for labour not only affects the number of “jobs”, but the pay (as here) and the quality of those jobs too.

Will the 2020s finally be the decade that the robots come for our jobs? (Spoiler: no. But they look likely to cause a lot of disruption.)

Al weten we niet exact wanneer, maar machines gaan steeds meer werk van ons overnemen, stelt econoom Daniel Susskind. Ons idee van wat werken is, moet daartoe veranderen.

I am inhaling 's new book "A World Without Work." If you have any interest in AI, automation, the future, socioeconomics, or, simply, the human condition, read it. I'm 100 pages in and it's already transformed my views on all of the above. Highly recommended.

If you can, take a moment to think about this boy. As a new Dad, I find it so, so painful. Then try to think of the nearly 1.5 million Jewish children who were murdered in similar ways. It is incomprehensibly evil. We must never forget.
