Many of the advancements in AI originate in the video game industry (RL, GPUs). Funny that the pursuit of laziness accidentally lead to a whole other technology.

At one point, @paultoo described FriendFeed and social media broadly as “capturing the power of the bored for the good of the lazy.” Your comment made me immediately think of that for some reason.

What are you talking about? RL does not originate from the video game industry. It's much older and originates from Game Theory. Game AI has been focused on search and state machine like models.

My statement remains invariant to your correction. Atari might even have done more harm than gain. But its results and all the rest was not for/from video game AI.

I'd argue it's not the pursuit of laziness, but instead the pursuit of enjoyable entertainment. In this context, pursuing entertainment has led to a significant minority or technological innovations. *Disclosure, I am not a gamer.

DeepMind and Blizzard are already trying! Real question is how long until the AI learns my double cloaked banshee opening. That will signal that the it will soon surpass humans.
