The startup advice paradox: founders are often great *because* they don’t care what people tell them.

Advice on any core issue needs to be thoroughly metabolized before it's useful, IMO. A few times I've regretted taking well-intended advice which was a bad fit for reasons the advisor simply didn't know. Love Paul Bucheit's "advice = limited life experience + overgeneralization"

Imho ultimately the only correct startup advice: "be successful then your were right"

When offered advice, ask for the story behind it.

That sounds like food advice. What’s the story behind it?

It's also useful about food. "You should try some Etiopian." "oh? What was the story there? new restaurant? good date?"

Touché - fast fingers. But I do actually agree it is "good" advice.

It’s because most advice is opinion based on experience. Lacks situational context.

Best ‘advice-givers’ ask excellent questions that help you understand your problem better. Best ‘askers’ only ask high believability people in that problem context and know how to triangulate answers to come up with their own solution.

Imo you should always listen to any advice you can possibly get, and then decide if it can be applied to your situation. Straight up just not caring what people with experience are willing to tell you is arrogant, not smart. Caring too much will blur your vision though.

My personal experience suggests this is wrong. Successful founders I’ve met are fantastic filters of information. They take in tons of info and intuit what’s right for the specific context.
