This is where creativity is going. Human creativity gets a big boost when it’s primed with suggestions and randomness. Humans set the direction. Then, computers insert suggestions and randomness. It’s a cycle. Rinse, rinse, repeat.

In 5 years: Pay-per-autocomplete. Want to get together for Taco Bell? In 100 years: just machines talking to each other through humans.

If I'm alive 100 years from now, I guarantee that I won't be typing messages into an interface like this one.

If we consider language's primary objective to convey intent, we won't need language.
-
I think language is more than expressing intent - it's also a manifestation of human creativity and individuality within the constraints of grammar, which we are at risk to lose if we outsource our writing to machines.
-
Disagree. We'll always have our opinions and stories to share, however we are imperfect in our ability to use language in conveying exactly what we think. Machines can bridge that gap, enhancing our individuality.
-
Mmm any examples of such imperfections? Not saying ML doesn't have applications - machine translation is one - but inserting ML into everything for the sake of automation without analyzing long term implications is how systems are broken. See recent FB/Burma crisis due to bad MT.
-
However, I did use Gmail's smart compose today and I had to force myself from not using its suggestions because it was definitely really good at jargon English/corporate-speak, which is what I use emails for.
-
But at the risk of contradicting myself, I still think we should think about long term effects of our ML projects/applications on society. Language, rooted in human cognition is more than what deep learning/pattern recognition can model IMHO.

I always wonder if Google's quick auto-responders will change my natural tone if I keep using them

I really doubt we would be manually inputing data in a fully integrated and automated world.

My guess: If acceptance rate is optimized, we might get less variance (by self-enforcement). If a positive response from the respondent is optimized, we might get a creativity explosion unlike anything we’ve ever seen in writing.

Advertisement will soon creep into auto complete... Just imagine some brands like McD, pay more $$ to be features replacing the tacos...
