We'd all have more economic security—better jobs, better wages, less debt, more savings, everything would cost less and be better quality.

Would 2008 have happened? If not, would cryptocurrency be as big without the resulting decline in faith of financial institutions?

9/11 led to aggressive monetary policy by the fed to hide war costs. Reduced interest rates -> “attractive” adjustable rate mortgages -> CDOs -> interest rates go up -> 2008.

It’s interesting to think about all the ripple effects - no NSA spying, no Iraq or Afghanistan wars, Bush could have been a 1-term president, less islamophobia, etc. It makes me wonder what the second and third order effects would be. Potentially a very different world.

Around 50k people with airport screener jobs would be doing something else.

Such a hard Q; having climbed down from 1 WTC 65 that day while brother re-routed to Newfoundland from Madrid (see @wecomefromaway) at same time, the appreciation of kindnesses and better perspective I’ve valued since day to day

Without 9/11, we would haven't have spent trillions on war. Congress would have been divided so the Bush tax cuts would have failed, GWB would have lost reelection and new Dem Admin would have done more regulation of the housing market, Great Recession wouldn't have been as bad.

the US government probably wouldn't have approved the Northwest-Delta merger, which means the United-Continental and American-US Airways merger probably wouldn't have happened. There would be greater airfare competition, more small cities serviced, and lower fares for consumers.

Unpopular Opinion: 9/11 wasn't a one-off independent event. If it didn't happen, Islamic Extremist groups would have still found a way to attack the US. Bin Laden and gang had already issued Fatwas against the US in 1996 and 1998.

One way or the other, I think it would still have ended up with the massive millitary 'war on terror'. The Al Queda had declared the 'holy war' and it would have needed stopping to prevent further attacks on the US.

It's quite possible that another major security crisis or terrorist attack would have happened in that decade. Likely not the same scale. Depends on whether you see the contributing factors as systemic or anomalous.

No 9/11, no "war on terror", no manufactured Islamophobia, no Donald Trump. No living in fear I'm gonna have my passport arbitrarily taken away because I'm transgender Also probably no second Bush term, which means at least a *chance* of Lehmann Brothers being averted.

Why stop there, what would our day to day lives be if British colonialists handn't installed the Al Saud's and Wahabbis and the US supported them ever since, or better if British colonialism hadn't happened and slavery in the US as well.
