Shakira was all we had for the longest time. Every Middle Eastern American, especially Lebanese, pointed to Shakira as the one entertainer with massive global appeal and popularity. To have our culture and our rhythms represented up there, even in the smallest way, is massive

Yes, even if Shakira maybe could’ve done better with the zaghrouta, it was still a performance that repped us. For that, and for many other reasons, we stan Shakira

Really don't think Americans realize how huge Shakira is world wide. (Maybe it's because of the FIFA song, but who knows!) At clubs in Uganda, at gyms and parties in Afghanistan, in the car on the way to the beach in the Philippines, I've seen people put Shakira on.

Lol I was having dinner with a group of men in
#Afghanistan (on the floor in the home where I stayed, traditional style: I was gendered male as foreign women tend to be), and they were like: "Important question: who do you like more?#Shakira or Natasha?" - Još 8 drugih odgovora

Loved the Mijwiz. Ever since ojos asi I wish she had continued to do more music incorporating Middle Eastern instruments, melodies, percussion. She has great production I loved what she did with Waka Waka. Want more Arabic influence
-
With Waka Waka, she ( and her production team ) beautifully blended the South African guitar, the Cameroonian chorus ( I believe) with the African Colombian rhythm. Wish she would create a fun fusiom song like that with Arabic musical influences.

That’s why Shakira is a huge global star. She doesn’t just sing, dance and shake. She pays tribute to other cultures in her performances. It may not be obvious to everyone but to those in that particular group, it is a homage to that they notice and appreciate. She is a genius.
-
this is true however it’s worth pointing out that shakira herself is half arab. she wasn’t paying tribute to anothers culture, she was bringing her own to the stage!
