Rosenberg is pulling a giant post hoc.

“The eagle’s eye is a measurably better seeing thing for an eagle than a sheep’s eye or a fish’s eye would be”. Agreed, but judged by what criterion? That's a non-trivial question with a recent surprising twist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rePbRdywA6Y&t=2329s&ab_channel=EvoEcoSeminars … Best, Lutz (Huge fan, by the way.)

Pure physics will not discover the unworldly; however, metaphysics (with support of physics) will. Thanks and with best regards,

"best book I ever read about Darwin" First book I thought of when Rosenberg said that was "Darwin's Dangerous Idea" I don't mark books up with a highlighter anymore, but back then my copy of that book was a mess of highlighted lines.

Engaging discussion! I feel you would both benefit from updating your physics though: the modern approach is Lagrangian mechanics, which puts almost everything from Maxwell's to Dirac's to Einstein's equations in the teleological language of minimizing the action integral. 1/2

Physicals systems behave _so that_ the action is minimal - Newton's equations could be seen as secondary. Not exactly Aristotle's telos, but neither can the standard dynamical approach be equated with the "efficient cause" (not on mathematical grounds at least).
