That feels like a poorly framed question. Religion is and ill-defined notion; and it probably depends a lot on how people collectively organize the spaces where they act and interact. So I think that by your own lights, the answer should be sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s not

Which religion? From the memetics POV, each is a memeplex containing many many behavioral patterns, each of which can be "good" or "bad" or something in between. Some of them may just be catchy making that religion more successful, but not necessarily "good" or "bad" for people.
