This seems entirely reasonable. You can't be retroactively blamed for a secretive criminal ring you didn't know about.

Thank you for saying that. The issue is not who knew what then, but why the academics who moved in his circles--and benefited professionally--haven't (yet?) been more outspoken now that they know. Silence from prominent academics doesn’t help those who’ve been abused/exploited.
