How Plato Foresaw Facebook’s Folly https://nyti.ms/2DrlFfV  Definitely worth reading now, and sharing.

But why is it Facebook's Folly? The article says itself that this is a user error problem. I won't retweet this because media is where I first heard that Facebook was toxic and now media is telling me how we misused it. Similar to slander against "Rick and Morty fans".

The challenges we experience today with management of the written word: did they in general probably not also arise with management of the spoken word? And what became of all that oral history that existed way before writing began?

Plato's argument has always been problematic due to its essentialist nature. There's nothing "intrinsically difficult" in loving, memorising, having a rational and measured debate. Nothing more than rhere is in learninf how to write, how to code, how to understand iconic language

Problems arise when we are not taught how to deal with technology. The problem is always within the culture (the complex agglomeration of norms, conceptual frames, and practices) that produce and disseminate technology.

And yet, without the invention of writing, we'd never be able to hear Plato's warning against it... That being said, technology is only as good as the people who use it.

@danieldennett Technology has made life much much more interesting. Old advertising companies will not go down without a fight. $goog $fb $twtr $snap have all enhanced the human condition. It’s like saying Galileo’s truth made things worse? Short run yes. Long term truth. ✅ ♻️

Sadly $fb is totalitarian in its equity structure. One person has majority vote. A modern day monarchy or totalitarian state. That will have to change going forward. $fb Voting needs to be democratized. Until then “mistakes are made at the point of decision” wb
