My favorite part about being a scientist: I get to work side-by-side with other folks who are so utterly charmed by the know-ability of the universe, that they’ve decided to devote a career to it - for however long they want, and for however long they can. Y’all are delightful 🙏

Your gut has an entire nervous system of its own with ~500 million neurons in it! That’s nearly 5x as many neurons as you have in your spinal cord, all working hard just so we can 💩

We developed this with biological applications in mind, but the tool can be used for any kind of time-series recording, from climate data to astrophysics data. We hope you find it useful!

My paper is finally published! Chaos is thought to appear everywhere in nature, and we developed an easy-to-use tool to detect it.

I'm biased here, but this is one of the strongest visual illusions I have ever seen. None of the colored lines are moving.

That said, here’s hoping it’s not just millionaires and billionaires who make it to 2150.

Consider: some people alive right now will live to see the year 2120 - and that’s even if we don’t make any life-extending medical advances in the *entire* next century. Which we probably will. Which means that some of us might be around for much, much longer.

The observable Universe is ~10²⁴ km, or 30,000 Megaparsecs (Mpc) across. It expands at ~70 km/s/Mpc due to dark energy, which stretches the Universe apart faster and faster with time. So in the past decade, the Universe has expanded by over 600 TRILLION km. Happy 2020, friends!

Consciousness is so diverse that I can’t even imagine what it’s like to be most people, let alone a bat with echolocation

(also I think open peer review encourages politeness - anyone have bad experiences with open reviews?)

I love that my peer reviewers’ comments will be published alongside my next paper. Everyone should be able to see, with their own eyes, the standards by which scientists judge each other’s work

General ideas I wish would die forever: 1/ - That you need to be some genius to be in science. - That if you're in scicomm, you're not serious about science. - That everyone in science is in it for accolades. - That there's this 1 mold for what a scientist is/looks like.

Fun fact: mice have a bigger brain-to-body size ratio than we do! What makes *us* unique is that our brains are WAY bigger than they need to be given our body size.
