In our project we are taking a different approach - using history, the arts, science and philosophy to create a cross-curriculum approach to feelings and emotions which is not about "mental health".

Yesterday, small groups of students in were given the name of a cemetery on the Western Front and an hour to produce biographies of someone buried there using the digital resources at their disposal. They did an extraordinary job.

This map shows the relative size of Irrecoverable Losses for each operation divided into the Soviet chronology (1st period 22 June 41-18 Nov 1942 2nd period 19 Nov 1942-31 Dec 1943 3rd period 1 Jan 1944-9 May 1945) although I have included the Manchurian Operation as well.

I read The Fortress as my Christmas treat to myself (I know, I know). It manages the impressive feat of dealing with big issues, reconfiguring the past, moving the reader at a human level.... and being commendably short. Don’t know how he does the last bit!

This is a great opportunity to hear Prof Watson talk about a brilliant book. Interested in how we write the history of war, of Europe and the 20th century? If you can get to Goldsmiths on Wednesday, you should go.

Next up our FIRST KEYNOTE Dr Aimee was our first name on the team sheet and were thrilled when she said yes. Following her publication of “Learning to Fight” we just knew a keynote would bring together so much of our day one programme.

A core problem with much of the 'expert' comment about the ongoing memory wars about WW2 is it presumes this is a recent issue, it's not. I'm also not seeing references to a key term: historiography. Debates about the causes, conduct, and conclusion of the war are 75 yrs old.

Map - animated map of bombing campaign from U.K. - use this to talk about fighting war of machines. Map plays in background over 5 mins while I discuss sea power and bombing strategy - and pose students ethical dilemmas. (Can’t share map sorry!)

Graph 3: U.K. imports by source/origin. U.K. needs access US resources & production. Can’t raise loans. Can’t export enough and build war industry. Uses up ‘war chest’. Lend-Lease key not just cos mil and civil supplies, but cos export inds can be run down in favour of munitions.
