Been thinking recently that there aren't really any men in my life, who are older than me, who I respect and look up to and want to be like. And wondering how long it's been that way.

This makes me wish you could meet Fraser. In lieu of him, I think the best way is to read read read. All my older role models came from discovering their books

-
Yes, that's a good point. Come to think of it, people like Terry Pratchett and Oliver Sacks are definitely models in my mind for growing older with great kindness and accomplishment.

I'm sorry to hear this. Do you have a sense of what you'd like to be like, when you're older? The sort of things you would like to have a role model for?
-
Not really I guess. Either professionally or personally. That's why I feel a bit lost as I start to get within sight of 40.

This is very interesting and I've never thought about it. I'm 54. I can't think of many men who are older than me who I can look up to. A few journalists, politicians, and thinkers maybe?
-
Yeah, I think that's where I have to look at well. Rather than within personal circles.

If it makes you feel any better, I think it’s very common to want to ‘take stock’ of your life at your age and think about where you are and where you want to be. Some men definitely want families. Some men definitely don’t. Remember to be your own person - there are no rules.
-
In a way that's comforting but also. How do I figure out where I want to be?
