The Junior Classical League has organized slave auctions for entertainment regularly over the last 60 years. When your membership is almost all white & identifies w/ enslavers, dehumanizing oppression is harmless fun, right? NO! Secondary Latin is not a white identity club 1/pic.twitter.com/5lpypMC039

Yes, in 2018, for fun, kids are auctioned off as "slaves" to be "ordered around" to "fetch food, sing, dance, and entertain." Here is a highly disturbing example of a similar event in California. These slaves are called "companion-monkey servants" in 2012. #ClassicsTwitter 2/pic.twitter.com/xbkXIh1RYC

In 2016, a JCL-affiliated slave auction went viral after black audience members were horrified by this racist tradition. JCL & the American Classical League pretended this was some sort of aberration even though it has been going on for over 50 years. 3/https://abc7chicago.com/news/parents-outraged-by-apparent-mock-slave-auction-held-at-hs-convention/1223540/ …

A slick PR lie is no substitute for reform, but then again the ACL/JCL are very protective of their traditions and white spaces. Slave auctions for entertainment are a longstanding tradition. Check out this example from the 1950s in Classical Outlook, the ACL's journal. 4/pic.twitter.com/sxBEWWVh0b

Secondary Classics has a diversity problem because secondary Classics has a white supremacy problem. It pervades the organization. Here is a question on the National Latin Exam that features the racist myth of the loyal slave.pic.twitter.com/3XHbab0CGs

Confederate enslavers used the myth of the loyal slave to justify slavery by blaming enslaved people for their own plight. Loyalty is predicated on autonomy and some degree of affection. This is a racist distortion of a human rights violation. Why is this on the NLE. 6/

There are countless other examples, including a write-up in a 2014 @camwsclassics newsletter that featured a teacher who listed a "master/slave" program as one of her JCL programs. Instead of publishing this, someone should have challenged this. 7/pic.twitter.com/fDfHGmkpIX

An NLE co-chair accused me via DM recently of wanting a spectacle. I do not want a spectacle. I want secondary Classics to stop promoting white supremacy. Leaders of ACL subsidiaries who are more concerned with image and optics than basic human decency need to step down 8/

It is time to clean up the field. My DMs are open if you want to help. END (for now-- because with secondary Classics, there is always more).

This is the genre of response I encounter most often from ACL/JCL/NLE loyalists. Knee-jerk defense using a variety of fallacies-- my two favorites: "I haven't seen it, so it must not be a problem" & "but it is a good org." #ClassicsTwitterpic.twitter.com/ahhM8f7IGe

I've said this before-- If you read a thread like this and your instinct is to protect the org instead of the people oppressed by this level of racism, you need to recalibrate your priorities. Mock slave auctions are racist & harmful. it This is a current problem.
