If Orban and Tucker are "conservatives" -- as the New York Times headlines here -- then the Times has a duty to explain to its readers that conservative now means right-wing extremist or neo-fascist. Language matters, but the Times (like so many others) is relentlessly sloppy.pic.twitter.com/VTNhGfcqHP

This kind of coverage normalizes democracies' accelerating demise. It normalizes the monstrous goals of these "conservatives" to end genuine democracy altogether and replace it with rule by strongmen and their friends. When will journalism wake the hell up?

We have never needed journalism -- the real thing -- more than today. The Times does lots of excellent coverage of almost everything but politics (in the broadest sense). But the Paper of Record cannot find the courage to fight for the republic in its news pages.

I think they’re using conservative to mean “protective of status quo culture, resistant to change, hostile towards progress”, which fits both of them even if they’re willing to use more extreme, authoritarian measures than some conservatives to protect their vision of utopia.

Conservatism has always been hostile to democracy because it believes that only some members of society have a right to dictate its norms and values, even if those people are outnumbered.

I'm going to guess a 35% decline in Poland's population is going to cause a serious upheaval in the international order between Russia and Europe.

NYT living up to its craven past of doing a puff piece on Der Fuhrer and his mountain retreat, literally just before he embarked upon the Final Solution and a war that killed 75 million people.

The thing about democracy is that its own fundamental precepts, especially in the United States, lead it to welcome in existential threats to it with open arms and do little to nothing to stop it.

Why don’t we re-introduce the term “reactionary”? Fits in multiple ways.

They only use "conservative" because it sounds so much nicer.
