I'm confused: the did NYT break the story of us being visited by aliens and we all just shrugged and went back to our barbecues?

And it was delicious! In all seriousness, wasn't there a caveat that most of the phenomena described did have natural explanations?

I actually think you're raising a legit point! It is weird that we've learned the military is chasing UFO stories and everyone is like "oh, ok" given the fascination with UFOs in our culture. Maybe the mind control conspiracies are true!

This was the exact point I was making in my column today. https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2019/05/28/ufos-exist-everyone-needs-adjust-that-fact/ …

The chance that these are faster-than-light alien spacecraft is so remote compared to an unknown human agency or natural phenomenon that it's not worth wasting mental energy.

It’s not just that interstellar travel is so hard for macroscopic structures, it also that it would be absurd to putter around the planet annoying military pilots.

Theyre not annoying millitary pilots. They're technologically advanced enough that you need sophisticated detectors to detect them. And these encounters are backed by several sensors and sources when you dig in to them FYI. https://www.explorescu.org/papers/nimitz_strike_group_2004 …

Regardless, seems like recent evidence of the large number of planets outside our solar system flips the normal question on its head. Why *haven't* we been contacted by aliens?

Hobby horse! I do agree on this, but I think anyone who attempts to answer this first has to acknowledge that *we have no clue what the probability of sentient life developing* is. The Drake Equation is all well-and-good,but we don't even have a good guess for half its terms.

It might also be a sort of slow reveal. Kind of like how Trump is desensitizing us to scandal. By the time we find out that aliens are among us and always have been, we’ll be like, “Who cares? The series finale of “Arya in the West” is on tonight!”
