I hate "doing SEO" so much. It feels like such an outdated process to me - like I'm trying to "game" a dumb version of Google from 2005. Google is infinitely smarter than it was 10, or even 5 years ago. You don't need to literally spell things out for it.
Use the language your users use. Define explicit structure, semantics, meaning and relationships in your content. I don't understand why people make it so hard. *waits for the SEO crowd to come and rage at me*

I agree with all you say. And it's also a way in the door for working with people on better/structured content, which is really what SEO is these days. I'm embracing it, and I've stopped prefacing my remarks about it with "I'm not an SEO expert" because, actually, I am.

Someone on my team saw the opportunity to create a content model in response to a client that wanted better SEO. I encouraged her keep that in the background and present them with all the front-end ways we could help with their ranking. It's a back-door to all the things!
