    Omg, so excited. Just completed my first ever deriv for compound specific stable isotope analysis of North Pacific right whale baleen. Cannot wait to run these samples next week to gain insight into the migration and physiology of these extremely rare whales.

    This is very exciting! Four different individual right whales were seen off Kodiak, AK, in August. One of these animals was seen off British Columbia just two months prior! We are slowly but surely learning more about the distribution and connectivity of this rare species!

    The North Pacific right whale was nearly hunted to extinction, and the population off Alaska has never recovered, numbering some 30 whales today. But two sightings this summer were a hopeful sign that more of the whales could be undiscovered.

    Today I spent five painstaking hours operating on a patient w/ breast cancer only to have her husband ask me when I updated him, “Is the surgeon going to come see me too?” They’ve been coming to my office for >8 mos AND I’ve operated on her before.

    My big takeaway is best put by in this article: “It's not just the fringe that's getting wetter”. Interior regions far from the coastline are also affected by sea level rise--how might this shift our ideas on the communities that will be affected by climate change?
