Honoured to be received by President . UNHCR fully agrees with Kenyaโ€™s move towards a sustainable strategy to support refugees and host communities, as piloted in Kakuma. I agree with the President that this will require strong international development assistance.

Dadaab has hosted Somali and other refugees for over 30 years. While pursuing more sustainable solutions with the Kenyan government, we must step up assistance to more than 50,000 new arrivals from Somalia, where they fled drought and violence. Donor support will be key.

Unless peace efforts are seriously pursued, civilians will continue to be killed, injured and displaced in northern Ethiopia. Meanwhile humanitarian workers must be able to do their work safely as they keep trying to reach Ethiopians and refugees in need of life saving support.

โ€œNever before have we moved so much. So easily. We move for work; for pleasure; for meeting with friends/family. But how often do we reflect on movement? And how much do we think about what flight means? How it is for refugees to move in a world that often does not want them to?โ€

Today is the first day of the 73rd session of the #UNHCR Executive Committee meeting. With more than 100 million people displaced around the world, we must continue to find solutions, protect those forced to flee, and share the responsibility #ExCom2022

I congratulate Angela Merkel on receiving the UNHCR #NansenAward. Under her leadership, Germany welcomed over 1.2M refugees & asylum seekers at the height of the Syria crisis. I commend her compassion, courage & commitment to stand up for what is right.

โ€œWe have never seen this kind of drought before.โ€ As Somalia faces its worst drought in 40 years and the prospect of famine, Somalis are abandoning their homes in search of food, water and aid.

"Our actions towards Ukrainian refugees must not be an exception. They can be a blueprint for going forward."- on extending Europe's solidarity. Thank you for making fair and quick procedures for all asylum seekers a priority, no matter where they come from. #SOTEU

1/4 The response to the Ukraine refugee situation shows Europeโ€™s capacity for an organized + workable approach to asylum that benefits states + protects refugeesโ€™ rights. This response was as President @vonderleyen said โ€˜Europe at its bestโ€™ + โ€˜must not be an exceptionโ€™. #SOTEU

As millions of vulnerable Afghans struggle with malnutrition, a lack of adequate shelter and impending winter, the UN Humanitarian Response is less than half-funded. If there were ever a time for the global community to step up for Afghans, this is it.

Congratulations to Liberia, to President @GeorgeWeahOff and his government for granting women and men equal rights to confer nationality to their children. Amending gender discriminating nationality laws is a key step towards preventing statelessness. Liberia is showing the way!

Unless we learn again how to make peace, the number of people #ForcedToFlee their homes by war, persecution and violence will continue to grow. We reached 89 million at the end of 2021 and we have gone over 100 million following the war in Ukraine.

โ€œPeople fleeing war, conflict and persecution deserve compassion and empathy. They should not be traded like commodities and transferred abroad for processing.โ€

The UK has an obligation to ensure access to asylum for those seeking protection. UNHCR strongly opposes the plan to export its asylum obligations. We urge the UK to refrain from transferring asylum seekers and refugees to Rwanda for asylum processing. bit.ly/36k3sBW

Thanks to Members of the European Union Parliament for their engagement. The situation in Ukraine, which in just a few weeks has resulted in the flight of 4.2 million people, is a stark reminder that one does not leave home, unless one has no choice.
