The biggest red pill I’ve taken in the last few years is the Intractability of Religion red pill: Absent believing in transcendent Truth and God, people will create or map on to their own secular religions complete with liturgy, sacraments, saints, and precepts. Few get this.

If you're starting a meditation company right now, you're probably too late. Calm was started in 2012. When explained the concept to me back then I thought he was crazy. Build companies that make people think you're crazy in 2020. We don't need more meditation apps.

"Men are made most attractive by displaying pride and least attractive by displaying happiness, whereas women are made most attractive by displaying happiness and least attractive by displaying pride...for younger women, male shame tends to be more attractive than male happiness"

You can hear the die-hard commitment in the words of stellar performers. Three quotes stand out. One from Kobe Bryant, another from Tiger Woods, and another from mathematician Jim Simons.

Everyone wants to be a boss but do you really have what it takes? Could you fire a disruptive employee who claims to have mental health issues while protecting yourself against the labor laws? Could you handle a payroll of over 10 people? And more.

Reasons why startups should price relatively high in general: 1. Easier to lower prices than raise them 2. PMF at low price doesn't mean PMF at a higher one 3. Less likely to leave money on the table 4. If your product is actually 10x better, it's worth it What else?

One of the best parts of starting a company is getting to interact with other founders. It's unlike anything I've experienced before. Grateful & helpful. Doesn't even matter if you're in the same market. There's this vibe of "It's hard enough, I hope one us makes it."

Someone on a live call the other day asked me how to write with confidence... Here’s the answer: People will hate you. People will find small things to complain about. Write content for the small minority who actually need help + want to be helped. Ignore the rest.

Shipping speed is a leading indictator of success. Applies to people. Applies to startups. Bet on people who move fast, make things, and learn from feedback.

If you ever struggle with “problem behaviors” like losing your temper, feeling like you have to be perfect, procrastinating, people-pleasing, or hating yourself, I highly recommend the book Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving.

Building a commodity put you in the wrong mindset to choose a customer, make hard trade offs and perfect the product. Also applies to platforms.

SaaS companies have approximately this dynamic but largely don’t securitize yet, because equity funding is so abundantly available for SaaS, but I will eat my hat if there are not billions of SaaS-cash flow backed securities issued by 2030. Probably closer to 2025.
