twitter started sometimes putting feed ad blocks at the top of the feed both on first load and on refresh. might be wrong but feels new? i’ll block every advertiser at this spot

had a realization a few weeks ago that me “not taking the first step” a few times in the past, which i thought of as closer to cowardice, was in hindsight noping out of things that weren’t good for me. i knew things were off but i didn’t have the vocabulary & rationalized as fear

is there an IDE refactoring like “remove a property from this type” or “add a new required property to this this type” and it walks you through every place where it’s used in the code, kind of like resolving a merge conflict

super pumped about the idea of writing a tutorial. like “do this, now we’re going to do that”, this kind of thing. i don’t think i remember ever writing that, it’s a new genre for me.

this was the last major piece missing from the Beta docs. i bumped the completion % numbers on the front page. we’re going to take a little holiday break, make a landing page, and cut over to the new site in January.

Top work. “an eight-month visual investigation by The New York Times concluded that the perpetrators of the [Bucha] massacre along Yablunska Street were Russian paratroopers from the 234th Air Assault Regiment led by Lt. Col. Artyom Gorodilov”

i kind of like this unironically. like show their avatars swarming over the tweet as it passes through their viewports.

5. Panem et circenses. Replace the Explore tab with a list of today’s tweets sorted by ratio. Get Jason to write some copy about why being on the list is good.

4. Replies, search, and DMs are sorted by the poster’s Elon Number. Unlike the legacy nobility system which was completely arbitrary, this one is meritocratic because it is based on a distributed interest graph with the company founder at the root.

3. Every user starts with their Elon Number set to Infinity. That’s like a purgatory where most Twitter users reside. If someone with a finite Elon Number follows you, your Elon Number becomes their_number + 1. It’s like a floor below. Elon has the top floor. (He sleeps there.)

2. Replace bluechecks with a new metric: Elon Number. The problem with the old bluechecks was that there was a collusion between the Silicon Valley elites and the NYT journalists. Elon Number is objective: it’s how many people are in the direct follow chain between Elon and you.

1. Let everyone read each other’s DMs. This would avoid the need for end-to-end encryption, simplify the system by 10x, and enable much better caching. There’s a non-zero chance that this might implode the world order, but who’s to say whether that would be bad or not.

Now that a visionary technologist is in charge of Twitter, I would like to offer a few product ideas. No credit needed — feel free to crop me out 🧵👇
