...any perceived flaw in other people's looks. I suspect most Incels have simply adopted such an unrealistic, fantasy idea of what a woman should be, that it's basically impossible for them to develop anything like a real relationship.

This is of course what The Handmaid's Tale envisions. A return to the fundamentalist society of the past, ruled by sick men playing out nasty fantasies of power and dominance. Atwood sees it all so clearly.

In isolation Incels would not be a threat. But clearly we live in a world in which crazy fantasists are forming cults of all kinds. The risk is that the centre ground of rationality shrinks so far that a number of these cults slide into power.

And what facilitated this change? Writing. The spread of written books and literacy to read them helped all kinds of crazy, dangerous, irrational ideologies to spread. The medium is the message. The church understold this, and once it had control, it brutally supressed writing.

Now we have the internet. And once again, a new medium is spreading batshit crazy ideas like wildfire. Incels are just one pocket of this lunacy. The early internet optimists predicted social transformation, but I think most missed the craaazy that would come with it.
