Yesterday was the orientation of for the freshers at IIT Guwahati. Although I'm not physically there, I still can't even explain how happy this makes me. It was born out of a discussion in my hostel room and will always reaffirm my belief in the power of conversations!

I asked a founder yesterday how his startup is going. He looked me in the eyes & said “I don’t think we’re gonna make it.” No fluff or ego protection. He was honest & we had a real conversation. Too many people hide their failures. It’s okay to say things aren’t working.

"Causeless correlation violates our common sense" - The Book of Why. It has quickly become one of my favourite books because of the fun combination of new mathematical knowledge along with the corresponding implications in the real world!

Every time I've found myself struggling or overwhelmed, there are 2 books that I've resorted to: Man's search for meaning & Inner Engineering. They helped me realize how much we are capable of enduring and how much there is beyond the digital lifestyle that's become the default.

The field is already self-correcting. Good departments/labs are clearing their eyes, caring less about paper count, seeing through the noise. Don't worry so much about the ICML deadline. Slow down, relax, try to do work you're proud of, submit when it's ready.

The more I learn, the less I know. I've accepted this, and am now just enjoying the ride.

“If you want to advance artificial intelligence, you don’t just do it in a lab,” said Peter Chen [..] “There is a huge gap in bringing it to the real world.” Was wonderful showing the robot in live-production and digging in with and !!

Legitimately one of the best insights I've internalized after years of doing research is the old classic - "ideas are cheap, execution is everything" [not quite everything, we still need cool ideas, but y'know]

This also forced me to follow a schedule by waking up very early and sleeping on time (which I have always struggled with, being a night owl naturally). I look forward to continue doing this and aim to someday reach the 10K mark! Thank you for reading all the way! :)

I tried using social media as a positive reinforcement for this and received a lot of support from my seniors, friends and colleagues during this time. It was incredible to start off my day at the beautiful Juhu beach and it really helped keep my energy level high during the day.

Personal update: Back in December, I decided to start running every morning. The goal was to keep doing it until it became an habit and running atleast 2km in each run. I am ecstatic to have completed 30 days of running today and hitting the 5km mark very recently.

Maybe some people simply prefer to continue doing what they love to do, even after 15 years, rather than get a large pay raise to do something they may be good at, but not love doing.

As far as current machine learning is concerned, generalization originates from the ability to learn the latent manifold on which the training data lies, i.e. the ability to interpolate between training samples (local generalization, by definition)

Honestly, the question is not, and has never been, "can machine learning replace radiologists/etc" (which won't happen in the foreseeable future). The question is, how can radiology/etc utilize ML to improve outcomes, decrease the cost of care, and broaden accessibility.

That is, until the model encounters something it hasn't quite seen before. Hence the need to keep humans in the loop...

"Our natural inclination is to postpone small costs so that they are borne not by our today self but by our tomorrow self instead" - Poor Economics. This book has so many insights, especially relevant today, when we are heavily inclined towards using technology for social good.

This is a great example of how we often keep doing fancy things, instead of getting the best out of simpler, more generic methods!

We had an incredible discussion session on ProGANS and StyleGANs and we thank our presenter Yash Wanth for his amazing demonstration... We will be releasing the demonstration soon on our Github repo so be sure to have a look...
