We can fix it. We have the technology. OK. We need to create the technology. Alright. The policy guys are mucking with the technology. Relax. WE'RE ON IT.

I'm increasingly thinking that every functioning system has two forms: The abstraction that outsiders are led to believe, and the reality that insiders actually and carefully operate. You don't incrementally learn a system. You eventually unlearn its necessary lies.

  3. Epic. This has become a huge thing in sports reporting (some product probably made it easy) and attaching it to p-hacking makes a lot of things easier to understand. Oh, you’re selecting metrics that sound like they’ve always been metrics.

  4. I hate to ask, but: Meta-trolling, actually posted for effect? Or Meta-deepfake, synthesized to inject more churn? These people have turned the marketplace of ideas into some sort of obnoxious video game. Ugh.

  5. A hundred million dollars is power, right? I give you a backpack with a hundred million dollars in cash. Drop you in any major city, post on Twitter your exact location. It’s power. Is it your power? For how long? A republic, if you can keep it.

  7. “Sure, it’s illegal. I’ve got kompromat. I’ll get a pardon. What do you have?” Ironically, the problem with absolute power is that others can absolutely lay claim to it. Power that you do not control is not power at all. You just take the blame. And here we are.

  8. That’s interesting. The problem with an all powerful executive isn’t that he’ll abuse his power. He might, he might not. It’s that anyone who thinks they have a claim to being able to force his hand, may represent themselves as being able to abuse his power. Credibly.

Watching computers used to actually implement humanity’s dumbest ideas is not what I expected but might actually be what I deserve.

I say this, for the glorious benefit of my permanent record. I should be so lucky that any AI dumb enough to filter me for this tweet would steer clear of me, forever. So: Fuck this shit, right in the pooper. Butthole? Ass? Cunt? Keywords, like Pokémon, gotta catch em all!

(Not because of “fate” or anything, but MAGA here does vaguely feel like a called shot. I mean, I can run the numbers, same as anyone, and see this is well within the realm of accidental collision. But there are certainly people who like their plausibly deniable puns.)

Of course, all this is from my vantage point, and I concede thoroughly that I’m a strange (though well-intentioned) actor in this play.

But the fake XP actually does want to work, which is sometimes nice to experience. That’s the thing about these silly video games. They want you to beat them. They literally say so. Only source of positive feedback in a lot of people’s lives. That is absolutely what’s going on.

Coding weird things is what I usually do, and so I end up with this smorgasbord of magic, which can end up making my world more complicated. Magic is...controversial. It’s a choice between fake experience points and real experience points, all the same to the machine.

Planet Alpha on the Nintendo Switch is of the “just...show me pretty things, ok?” genre. Which I didn’t know was a thing, until the Oculus Quest made it really obvious. These games, they’re a way to stop myself from looping on more stressful matters that just need time.

Corruption. It’s a problem. It’s the problem. The system is too dependent on fundraising. Too vulnerable to it. If “the people” want representation, “the people” have to pay for it. There’s other bidders.

Dead Cells feels like playing a really well designed GAN, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
