If we can't agree on masks and vaccine mandates, it might be worth mentioning that in the 1930s and 1940s, it was not unusual for schools to delay opening because of rising cases of polio over the summer.

So, a thread sharing a few articles I've seen lately. That are each notable and together seem to be... pointing at something... somehow. 1/x Remote work made life easier for many people with disabilities. They want the option to stay.

I ran from William H. Smith in Sept. 1829. He had bought me from Maj. William Vance’s estate, where I was listed with Sancho and his sister Lizey for $1300. Smith was still looking for me in Feb. 1830, where he threatened to sell me out of state if caught. I was called TENAH.

like even on smaller, more micro scale stuff it works. teachers that make a Polite Public Request For Changes In Their School to benefit the students and the teachers health are taken a lot more seriously if they've also recently been willing to do a wildcat strike

A friend of mine was flat-out told that if she didn't plan to stay in academia, she was a waste of faculty mentors' time. 🤷‍♀️ Students are worried for good reason and faculty need to seriously do better - individually and at the department culture level.

Thinking today about the climate and personal responsibility vs. personal power. The greatest trick corporations pulled was convincing us that we, personally, are responsible for all pollution, because we ate the wrong thing or bought the wrong car or didn’t recycle enough.

Interesting blog article about Janet Dailey's new books being authored by an unknown ghost writer. Dailey died in 2013, but new books written by "Janet Dailey" continue to be published at around the rate of two or three novels per year.

Don't wait too late to start exploring career options. If you're not ready to network just yet, start by doing a little introspective thinking about your values and/or what you need to thrive in a workspace. Check out these other points to consider:

I work at a food bank, and I spend a lot of time at food pantries and food distributions. I get asked all the time, "do you think people LIE and come to get food if they don't really NEED it?" 👀 My short answer is: no. My long answer is: (thread)

When asked, most PhDs want to work where they'll have an impact. You don't have to stay in academia to find purpose. Not only are private sector jobs filled with meaningful careers, but they're also intellectually stimulating and challenging.
