Contrast with DRS in cricket: like VAR it was intended just to 'get more right decisions', and its introduction has had a similarly unintended consequence in that it has led to more LBWs being awarded, and batsmen no longer being able to rely on the big stride forward.

The game is over, 3-3, and we are here as on a darkling plain trudging back to Stratford station.

I'm glad people have liked this thread. The ideas about tacit knowledge are inspired by my day job

You’re either a very quick typer, or that was an epically long VAR check.

Bit of both.

Didn’t look like a very obvious handball to me, although at the LS the view is so far from the pitch you are in a different postcode it’s not possible to make a great judgement

15 minutes? That's ludicrous. Figure it out in 60 seconds or less, or call on field stands. NHL suffers from this. They look at pixels of skate blades, the puck and the blue line. If it's that close, then whatever was or was not called should stand. VAR is killing sports

There is also something about legitimacy. In cricket and rugby, the crowd can hear the audio and video. This means they can understand the reasoning and process by which the decision was reached. Not so with VAR, which I think is a significant flaw.

Great thread. And a VAR combination of technology & human judgement just doesn't work. More questions than answers... Goal-line technology works perfectly in football as there are no grey areas same as Hawkeye in tennis......

DRS generally works well in cricket even if ball-tracking can seem a little suspect at times.

Fascinating, thank you. I think I’m more optimistic than you are that, with patience & good will (neither of which are much in evidence) it can be made to work, though it’s going to require some creative work on the laws to codify that ‘tacit knowledge’. https://twitter.com/jembenson/status/1162986606313295872?s=21 …https://twitter.com/jembenson/status/1162986606313295872 …
