Extremely zeroth-order-draft notes for a lightning talk on ed(1):https://gitlab.com/drj11/5-minute-ed/ …

Heh, I remember a person I knew on the good old Usenet who had in their signature "Ed is good for you". I still think to this day that she was right :)

I almost gave this talk at PyConUK last month, but ran out of spoons. Despite cheerful goading by "friends". Will give it next year (if my card gets drawn!), ed's 50th anniversary!

All programmers should be required to use ed, and only ed, for all source code and other text file editing, for one week each year.

Or for however long it takes them to code up a more advanced text editor using it.

But Emacs is the One True Editor™ (and kitchen sink), so clearly everyone should know it. OK so use Vi and/or Vim occasionally but always come back to Emacs. Or an IDE. Buttttttt only with Emacs key bindings, obviously.

By" IDE" you mean some kind of mode running within emacs?

:-) Having used Emacs for 30+ years, I still only use it as an editor, I have to date failed to use any of the IDE modes.

Me neither. I don’t even maintain a customization file.

Customisation I do quite a lot of. I think I now know too much ELisp.
