Kid seems to be interested in learning electric guitar. I know nothing about this. So, I'm seeking some advice from followers if you have any. Go.

Never seen kid so excited as when we got the electric guitar setup plugged in. First some horrible shredding distortion sounds. Then, some wild 3-minute one-chord song involving singing, wild strumming, flourishes, and some kind of sibling-related angst. Uh. Yeah. Ok then.

So… I should do up another one of these for the PyCon auction? https://mobile.twitter.com/i/moments/1002644684773175297 …

I would have totally bid on that—had I not been raging sick last pycon (gave my auction ticket away).

I started on a $110 Takamine Nylon String acoustic and the Stratocaster was used as bait to keep my interest by my very intelligent and encouraging (also musician) parents. Practice for 2 years straight with a weekly lesson was required to make it become 'fun'.
-
Fun was achieved when I gained some musicianship.. Now it's just a big part of my life. This was ages 9 to 11 yrs.

Going to disagree. I hated piano: parents said I had to take lessons; teachers wanted to teach Bach because "it teaches the fundamentals", but I wanted to learn Elton John because that's what I liked.
-
Quit piano after a year. Seven years later, I bought a guitar, determined to learn how to play "Scarborough Fair". I started by teaching myself to play *that song*, started with learning about tablature, practicing every day. I was driven. I was *enjoying* learning.

If your practice isn't actually fun, shake it up and do something different.
