Kid seems to be interested in learning electric guitar. I know nothing about this. So, I'm seeking some advice from followers if you have any. Go.

For example, what to even get as an instrument? Do I just go get a cheap Stratocaster or something?

I’m no expert, but, Electric guitar is easier on your fingers than acoustics, and Squier makes a pretty budget friendly Stratocaster that’s decent quality. There’s tons of YouTube content, when I started learning I learned to read tabs then googled songs I wanted to learn.

...which is exactly how you should learn if you want to waste your time and be a hack guitar player for the rest of your life. This isn't a video game, it's an art. Doing paint-by-numbers is nowhere near as satisfying as learning to paint.

Which is why I prefaced it with the not being an expert bit, it’s also a way to go from no knowledge of an instrument to more knowledge of an instrument. But by all means don’t bother suggesting another way, just insult strangers on the internet who were trying to help.

Honestly, I just want the kid to enjoy it. Will try a teacher, but if he just ends up noodling and self studying, that’s ok too.

I'm not trying to be overbearing about this, but you say that he's shown interest in learning guitar. As a parent who likely wants him to succeed in life, it may behoove you to teach him to take on the challenge of learning correctly. Learning music affects all learning skills.

Well, you seem concerned about buying a more expensive guitar. There's no waste of money bigger than getting an unplayable guitar with no direction. This is an art, not a video game. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.
