Kid seems to be interested in learning electric guitar. I know nothing about this. So, I'm seeking some advice from followers if you have any. Go.

For example, what to even get as an instrument? Do I just go get a cheap Stratocaster or something?

One consideration is that I might be the ultimate owner of this guitar if kid loses interest. Would I learn to play it? Probably. Rock on!

So maybe getting a slightly “better” guitar might not be an entirely bad idea.

Welp, decided to rent first just to get things off the ground with some basics. I’m going to try and learn too. Because why not?

Never seen kid so excited as when we got the electric guitar setup plugged in. First some horrible shredding distortion sounds. Then, some wild 3-minute one-chord song involving singing, wild strumming, flourishes, and some kind of sibling-related angst. Uh. Yeah. Ok then.

Kid is a little mad at me because I know two chords.

If they're going to get a small practice amp, the Boss Katana Mini and Roland Micro Cube are a good choice for beginners

If you can afford it, get a better guitar. It will be easier to play and sound better. Mexican strats are really good quality these days. Roland cube amps are good. Or “guitar rig” by Native Instruments is amazing if you’re willing to play through your computer.

Try Epiphone/Gibson 339 and les Paul. Fender strat/tele from Mexico or us. Pick which one feels most comfortable. http://Justinguitar.com  for free well structured lessons. It's a fun journey!

This is good advice with learning any instrument. How about finding a teacher and getting their advice on what instrument for learning?

Suggest acoustic over electric though. No amp required, more portable and isn't nearly as loud.

I'm a pretty good fingerstyle guitarist. I'd say get him a fender stratocaster with a small amp. If he continues playing guitar he will want a fender strat anyways.

I’ve been teaching guitar for over 20 years and my “first axe” advice is always go mid-range. Shitty guitars feel bad and will make the student hate practicing but most beginners can’t tell the difference between average and amazing. Just make sure to try it first!

Absolutely. Nothing will frustrate and discourage a beginner like a mediocre instrument.
