Kid seems to be interested in learning electric guitar. I know nothing about this. So, I'm seeking some advice from followers if you have any. Go.

One consideration is that I might be the ultimate owner of this guitar if kid loses interest. Would I learn to play it? Probably. Rock on!

So maybe getting a slightly “better” guitar might not be an entirely bad idea.

Welp, decided to rent first just to get things off the ground with some basics. I’m going to try and learn too. Because why not?

Never seen kid so excited as when we got the electric guitar setup plugged in. First some horrible shredding distortion sounds. Then, some wild 3-minute one-chord song involving singing, wild strumming, flourishes, and some kind of sibling-related angst. Uh. Yeah. Ok then.

I’m no expert, but, Electric guitar is easier on your fingers than acoustics, and Squier makes a pretty budget friendly Stratocaster that’s decent quality. There’s tons of YouTube content, when I started learning I learned to read tabs then googled songs I wanted to learn.
-
...which is exactly how you should learn if you want to waste your time and be a hack guitar player for the rest of your life. This isn't a video game, it's an art. Doing paint-by-numbers is nowhere near as satisfying as learning to paint.
-
Which is why I prefaced it with the not being an expert bit, it’s also a way to go from no knowledge of an instrument to more knowledge of an instrument. But by all means don’t bother suggesting another way, just insult strangers on the internet who were trying to help.
-
Honestly, I just want the kid to enjoy it. Will try a teacher, but if he just ends up noodling and self studying, that’s ok too.
-
Well, you seem concerned about buying a more expensive guitar. There's no waste of money bigger than getting an unplayable guitar with no direction. This is an art, not a video game. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

I'd say fender strat for about 700$ is perfect for a first time guitar. He won't get sick of it. Plus you're gonna need an amp to go along with it. Get something not too loud!!!

I wouldn't go too cheap, and not too expensive. Sometimes stores have rental-to-buy options for instruments, you rent until you own it (or return it if the kid loses interest).
-
Also regular lessons are a good idea. But make sure that the instructor likes the music your kid would like to play. I.e. sometimes classical guitar teachers teach electric as well, and sometimes there isn't the spirit in the teaching then.
-
Usually guitar teachers are guitar dealers as well for their students. They will not sell guitars that are hard to play.

I'm self-taught, been playing for 25 years or so. On one hand, I'd suggest an acoustic guitar from a pawn shop, in the $100-150 price range. And make it a goal for the kid to learn a little bit of stuff in order to "earn" an electric guitar. Don't string him out longer than ...
-
... 6-9 months or so, though. On the other hand, there's really nothing wrong with picking up a low-end electric guitar "starter" kit, which would include a small amp, the guitar, and a cable (maybe a strap). Often avail at your local guitar shop in the $200-250 range.

Final point: hit up http://reddit.com/r/guitar for advice, it's a pretty friendly group of folks, would be glad to help you assess your options beforey ou pull the proverbial trigger. Good luck!

Yamaha Pacifica are usually pretty good for starting, as is the Squier Affinity series. It can be off-putting to learn on a really bad guitar, but those are usually good value and widely available!

Squier (so Fender's budget brand) are quite good for their prices
