He once cherished his portrait of Robert E. Lee. At age 63, retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal threw it away—and wants no part of that slaver's twisted legacy https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/why-i-threw-away-my-portrait-robert-e-lee/573631/ … @TheAtlanticpic.twitter.com/ipZw1aFYUH

The alternative was to take up arms against his home and heritage - the Commonwealth of Virginia. Perhaps he should have taken up arms against his own family?

Like George Thomas and the around 100000 southerners that remained in or enlisted in the Union army to combat the southern insurrection? Yes.

Lee was a brilliant soldier in the US Army for 30 years but within days of his beloved Virginia's secession he turned down Lincoln's offer to command the Union Army and resigned his commission. He was a loyal son of Virginia not a slave monger.

Lee was taken to court for violating his father in laws’ Will and failing to manumit the slaves on his inherited estate and was regarded as a particularly cruel master. He also oversaw enslavement of free African Americans during his invasions of the north during the war

I’m old enough to recall being told how wonderful this guy was and how he epitomizes the new breed of warrior monks that were the best our system could produce…. Turns out he is not mentally strong enough to hold two conflicting thoughts in his head at the same time.

In reading documents of the time, it was called The War of Rebellion....somewhere along the way it got sanitized...

Unless it's just a print - I draw the line at throwing away art. Paintings, art, should not be thrown out because they are controversial. What if someone threw away "Guernica" or Banksy art because it offended them? A LOT of art is political.
