True (eg the hard-easy effect) but I think the overconfidence I was referring to would be a type of overprecision, not overconfidence in task performance (and overprecision is much more robust/widely observed, https://learnmoore.org/mooredata/HOC.pdf …)

Hmm, does seem a little hard to believe, but plausible I think. From (admittedly quick) look at the paper, seems the study was carefully done, and I think safe to assume the researchers were not paid for it, though of course receive professional benefits.
Yes. Often those are supremely adapted to social manipulation anyway.
I suspect peoples' accuracy decreases dramatically when they're consciously looking for "telltale signs" they read about in some news article about a scientific study. :)
