“Twitter is obviously full of the notion that what we should do is condemn those who disagree with us. What we can now say experimentally, the key to the success of these conversations is doing the exact opposite of that.”

If a news story fills you with fury, pause, take a deep breath, and reflect that the story was likely embellished specifically to fill you with fury.

A great way to realise the sheer quantity of information our 🧠 seamlessly processes when we do a “simple” task like driving a car. This is what the Tesla autopilot sees using a neural network which took 70,000 GPU hours to train. ht

I think that a priority for the social sciences in the 2020s should be to help organizations (esp. universities and companies) to achieve high levels of cooperation (including productive disagreement) despite the many forces pushing for internal conflict and hatred.

Such a cool new paper by & Shows persuasion is possible, even for touchy subjects. But takes time, stories not stats, & crucial to be non-judgmental. cc (& anyone skeptical of engaging w those we disagree with?)

This is such important research. It is possible to talk people out of bigotry. But the method that seems to work is time-intensive, emotionally difficult, and requires a lot of careful work to keep people from reacting defensively.

Today, I'd like to give a shout-out to those JMCs who haven't gotten any first-round flyouts. I was right there among you 5 years ago.

Amazing. Almost as impressive as the guy who hit a golf ball in a hole from 200 yds away and the other guy who picked all 6 winning lotto numbers once. 😛

Cool, helpful. But what’s marginal carbon effect of hot dog vs t-bone steak? (serious question! cheap cuts/byproducts avoid waste and have low (no?) effect on beef cattle supply ?)

Here's your periodic reminder that basic research is only "useless" until it suddenly becomes the most important thing in the world. 20 years ago, coronavirology was an obscure sub-field the public never heard about. Good thing we funded it anyway.

We need to allow more virtual talks at universities. It leads to reduced: -physiological stress from jet lag -travel costs borne by hosts -damage to the environment In so many ways, it’s a huge win for everyone. I’m vowing right now to do this with my future university invites.
