It is time for a episode on my favorite movie of all time: Star Wars! Droids, can you get a binary sunset, holograms, parsecs, ion engines, the Death Star, and more!

  5. Sergei is right, big parts of the calculation are done by his code STELLA, and I should have said MESA+STELLA, and given them credit. I haven't seen the bit on Japanese TV or seen any other Betelgeuse SN lightcurve, but I will try to find them.

Right about now 49 years ago Apollo 14 Lunar Module, Antares touched down at Fra Mauro. Alan Shepard, first American in space became the world's 5th moonwalker. Pin sharp, perfectly exposed image of Shepard, and the LM (landing at an 8deg tilt) reprocessed for

Why do people say a supernova will be as bright as the half moon, when the plot shows it will be ~10x fainter than the full moon? The half moon is 8.5x fainter than the full moon. A half moon only has sunlight glancing off the limb and has more shadows.

Interesting -- the average human body temperature is now 97.5 deg F, and it may have changed over time.

It seems the only thing that will get some states to confront their seriously problematic voting systems is public humiliation. Maybe this will be a wake-up call.

2/ You'd never use "half moon" to refer to orbits because that's a full moon. "Quarter moon" never refers to light because that's a crescent moon.

Moon phases fun facts: Half moon and quarter moon mean the same thing. That's because quarter moon is when it is one-quarter or three-quarters around its orbit. But that's when half is lit. "Quarter" always refers to orbits, "half" to light. 1/

Unlike Betelgeuse, this tweet thread is blowing up. I don't have a soundcloud, but you can watch me ask movie stars tough science questions, and scientists tough Hollywood questions in Science Vs Cinema.

One caveat: I don't think will blow up any time soon. As a red supergiant it is a variable star. It has 3 types of variability with different periods, and they seem to be all coinciding to make it about as dim as it has been in a century. 8/

Betelgeuse fans, feel free to use the plot. That's why we made it. I kept getting asked what a supernova would be like and didn't have a good graph.

MESA is an open source stellar evolution code developed at by Bill Paxton, Lars Bildsten, and others. You can download it and simulate your own stars and supernovae. 6/

The above plot is only the visible part of the spectrum, because we wanted to show roughly what your eye could see. Across all energies, a SN would be much more energetic. For the first few weeks it would be so hot, most of the light would come out as ultraviolet. 5/

Af you want to hear more about getting dimmer, and what supernova Betelgeuse will be like, Evan and Jared are giving a talk about it Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 pm at , Santa Barbara at . And I'll cover the gravitational wave burst. 4/

Of course the mass, distance, and exact details of the explosion are somewhat uncertain, and SN 1987A may not be the best example for the radioactive tail but it is the best observed. This is probably the best we can easily do given the uncertainties. 3/

I got tired of back of the envelope Supernova calculations, so I asked Evan and Jared to do a better job. They used MESA to simulate the explosion, added the dispersion associated with similar supernovae, and added the tail from SN 1987A. 2/
