Yep! dClimate served as a settlement layer for $170 million worth of climate climate contracts last year - helping stakeholders around the world achieve financial resilience. And that is just from our work with ! Congrats to their team on the tremendous growth.

For non-scientists like me trying to understand the bombshell & reports that 90% of the voluntary #CarbonCredits certified by for rainforests in #SouthAmerica, #Africa, etc., are worthless, this thread from is an excellent primer.

1/9 Last week @guardian published an investigative journalism piece, voicing hefty criticism regarding the issuance of voluntary carbon offset credits by @VerraStandards called VCS. What is the critique, is it true, and what are possible solutions? A thread👇

7/9 If only 6-30% of the issued REDD+ credits are high quality and 25-90% are junk, the entire VCM is questionable. Verifiability/quality control of credits is important, otherwise this market just enables greenwashing. Human verification is part of the problem.

6/9 The stats: only 6-30% of REDD+ credits are valid. Scientific sources in the article claim that 6% of Verra’s REDD+ credits are high-quality. The VCM market report from (Nov. 2022), claims 30% is high quality (143M credits)👇

We’ve launched our annual data report, The State of Carbon Credits. It provides insights on the VCMs and for the first time, it includes Sylvera ratings on REDD+ projects. What do our ratings reveal? Nearly a third are high quality. Download the report: bit.ly/3zHavjk

5/9 TL;DR: Scientists used satellite imagery to double-check REDD+ forest conservation projects verified by , finding, “a big gap between the amount of deforestation his team estimated the projects were avoiding and what the carbon standard was approving.”

3/9 is the biggest verifier in the VCM, with ~70% market share. Since 2002, they’ve issued 460M credits from Nature Based Solutions (NBS), ~30% of all issued credits. If these forest credits are worthless, it is a big deal.
