Today, Therese Patricia Okoumou, a Congolese immigrant, scaled the Statue of Liberty and said she would not be moved until all the children detained from ICE were released. “We who believe in freedom cannot rest.” Ella taught us. #AbolishICE (Photo via AJ+)pic.twitter.com/bu4uEKR4PQ

As a New Yorker, this made me really proud of my city and so many of the people in it.

I am seeing “she” pronouns in every publication I’ve read so far but haven’t seen anything in Therese Patricia’s words. Important not to assume. Trying to find sources where Therese speaks/writes about themselves!

I am also looking to hear more about legal support! I can’t imagine what the level of response to this will be. Protect Therese at all costs 🙏🏾

So the response from @riseandresistny (organized banner action Therese participated in) appears real sheisty right now. They released a statement saying that since her decision to climb was made independently, she is not their responsibility. This is fucked up.

Folks ask, who is Ella? I struggle to describe the immensity of her life and impact, but Ella was an incredible organizer/freedom fighter/thought leader for Black liberation. I first learned the extent of her work from organizers in @BYP_100.

In a 1964 speech for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, Ella said: "Until the killing of black men, black mothers' sons is as important as the killing of white men, white mothers' sons, we who believe in freedom cannot rest until this happens."

Ella Baker! My apologies, I was typing quickly and not putting respect on her full name or aiding those looking her up 🤦🏽‍♀️

"a very violent scary place" - you mean the USA? Keep your dangerous tropes and respect for police.
