The Dutch make five billion bicycle trips each year, covering 17.6 billion km; or 1,000 km per person. We're pleased to share this new book of 'Best Practices'; drawing from decades of infrastructure, policy, and programming that has led to this success. https://dutchcycling.nl/bestpractices pic.twitter.com/s6CcbAwI16

Bikes in the Netherlands sometimes double up as:
Shopping trolleys
Moving vans
DIY material transporters
Beer carriers
Mini vans
As @AmandavMulligen explains, almost anything can be transported on the front, back or side of a two-wheeler. https://turningdutch.com/2018/05/23/the-dutch-do-it-you-should-too-cycling-in-the-netherlands/ …pic.twitter.com/5MN3jhhZrx

Cyclists who form a group of three or more (a "chain") automatically receive the green light at busy intersections. https://www.hengelo.nl/Inwoners/Parkeren-en-verkeer/Verkeer/Fietsketting.html …pic.twitter.com/vkP9WiiP7u

Dutch cycling and public transport networks are among the most intricate in the world; but how does this impact accessibility? In Utrecht (population 359,000) more than 79% of the inhabitants (283,705) live within 10 minutes by bike from a train station. https://movares.nl/nieuws/bereikbaarheid-in-kaart-ruim-44-van-de-nederlanders-op-10-minuten-fietsen-van-een-treinstation/ …pic.twitter.com/V1J3NwFl41

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is defined as “the sum of all expenses/costs associated with the purchase and use of equipment, materials, and services.” It is an area in which the automotive industry excels. Why bike lanes alone won't get everyone cycling: "The most important part of a bike plan is the car plan. We must reduce the speed, volume and access of motor vehicles on our streets. If we are to see mass cycling, we need to tame the car in our cities." https://soundcloud.com/biketalk/bike-talk-car-freedom?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing#t=2:17 …pic.twitter.com/AWsdRXISZp
