First up, how many bananas in a container? A standard forty footer holds 20 pallets. There are maybe 6 boxes of bananas per level, 10 levels, and 100 bananas per box? 120k bananas per box.

Chilled is different though - these need to be kept +/-1degC. These operate with the compressor and fans on all of the time, and modulate the temperature either with a suction throttle or compressor bypass. This uses a lot more power.

Further to that, most chilled products need to have the vents opened to allow a % of fresh air exchange, to stop build up of ethelyene and carbon dioxide, which ripen the product. So it's not a closed system anymore.

I am picturing dilithium crystals being replaced by bananas on Star Trek now, thank you. Seriously tho, this is great info. Thanks!

Wow! Very easy to understand explanation! What about canned vs frozen? Does the consumption of resources to make/recycle a can and heat and seal it properly outweigh the benefits of the extremely long storage time with virtually no temp regulation needed?
